FAQs about
Widescreen Support

(June 2005)

Do WolfVision Visualizers offer "HD (High Definition) resolution" or just "HD compatibility"?

WolfVision's 3-CCD Visualizers VZ-57plus, VZ-C30 and VZ-C32 use 2,3 million pixels per image. This is equal to HD (High Definition) resolution. However the resolution of the 1-CCD Visualizers VZ-9, VZ-27plus, VZ-C11 and VZ-C12 is lower than HD. So it can be said that the 3-CCD models offer "HD resolution", but the 1-CCD models are just "HD compatible".

Is the picture quality better when the Visualizers output HD (High Definition)?

Basically no. The native image ratio of the Visualizer cameras is 4:3. Therefore 25% of the 4:3 picture is cut off (above and below) when the Visualizer outputs in 16:9 widescreen format, while the resolution of the image stays the same. Upscaling to HD does not bring any improvement in resolution.

However if you are using a display device with an aspect ratio of 16:9 or 16:10, the picture quality usually is better, when the Visualizer scales the image to the widescreen format, and not the display device. This is because the Visualizer scales the picture at the image source with high end electronics

Why does WolfVision not use the "HD-ready" logo?

Because the HD-ready logo is made for display units not for recording units.

Do WolfVision Visualizers offer an analogue HD (High Definition) output?

Yes, they can output analogue HD on the RGB output. However there is no Component (YUV) output.

Why does WolfVision not support the HD (High Definition) standard 1080i?

Because this standard requires an interlaced image while the Visualizer camera outputs a progressive scan image. The picture quality of progressive scan images is better. It would not make any sense to loose picture quality by converting a progressive scan image to an interlaced image, and afterwards the de-interlacer of the display unit converts this to a progressive scan image again. Instead of 1080i WolfVision supports the "Progressive Scan version" of this standard, which is called 1080p. Most high end display units can also use this standard. However with most display units the standard with the best compatibility is 720p, which WolfVision also supports.

Will there be firmware updates for Widescreen Support for older WolfVision Visualizer models?

No. Because high resolution Widescreen Support requires hardware with a large amount of memory and high computing power. Older models with 20 frames per second (like VZ-8plus, VZ-8light, VZ-57, VZ-27, VZ-C10 etc.) do not meet these hardware requirements.

Why does WolfVision use the term "HD/HDTV"?

That's just for better understanding. Technically the correct term would be HD (for "High Definition). But the term "HDTV" is much better known. So in order to make it understandable for everyone we wrote "HD/HDTV" on some older brochures .
It happens sometimes that terms with are technically not completely correct prevail in everyday use (For example "S-Video" instead of "Y/C" or "VGA-Connector" for the "15-pin Sub-D plug")
